Scope and Contents of the Materials

This two-box collection contains a few thousand photographs, slides, page proofs, and negative images taken by professional photographer Larry McNeil. These images consist of snapshots from the Sealaska Heritage Institute’s bi-annual Celebration festivals, specifically for Celebration 1982, 1984, 1992, and 2000, wherein the members of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Native American Indian people gather to dance and celebrate their culture. Materials have been arranged chronologically and then by format type.

Biographical Note

Larry McNeil, of Tlingit Native American Indian descent, was born in Southeast Alaska and grew up in Juneau and Anchorage. He graduated in 1978 from Brooks Institute, Santa Barbara, California with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Photography and received his Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of New Mexico Albuquerque. As of 2009 he was an Associate Professor of Photography at Boise State University, Boise, Idaho teaching both film and digital-based photography. Over the past years, he has exhibited portions of his ‘fly by night’ project at venues including the International Center of Photography in New York City, the San Diego Museum of Art and The Barbican Gallery in London.

Acquisition Source: Larry McNeil

Acquisition Method: The materials in the collection were obtained by and/or donated to SHI by Larry McNeil between 1982 and 2000 in various batches. Materials from the 1980s were obtained during the late 1980s and the Celebration 1992 proof sheets were received on June 23, 1992. All materials documenting Celebration 2000 were generated while Larry McNeil hired by SHI to photograph the Celebration festival, and in the fall of 2000 these materials were then given to SHI as specified by the contract. Copyright is held by both McNeil and SHI for the 2000 photographs.
