Ukas, Harry (1915-1993) | Sealaska Heritage Institute Archives
Harry ‘Bud’ Ukas (1915-1993) was born on September 22, 1915 at Wrangell, Alaska, the son of Thomas Ukas (1879-1973) and Josephine ‘Josie’ Lewis (1879-1977). Harry Ukas was a Tlingit Indian of the Teeyhittaan clan. He graduated from the Wrangell High School, and then served in the merchant marines during Second World War. Sources indicated the Harry Ukas was very interested in the history of the Wrangell Tlingit, and he was contracted to teach Alaska Native students in the Wrangell and Juneau school systems about their Native heritage.
In 1941 Harry Ukas married Leveda Margaret Mather (1922-1981), who was Tsimshian and Wasco/Paiute, and together they had one child together that did not live to adulthood. Ukas and Mather divorced sometime prior to 1947.
Ukas died in Juneau in 1993.
