Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of a 41-page transcript from a review of Tlingit and Haida art at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in 2005 for a then proposed exhibit entitled “Recovering Voices.” The exhibit was eventually hosted at the Arctic Studies Center, Smithsonian Institution, within the Anchorage Museum, and the 2005 review of art at NMAI was to gauge Tlingit and Haida opinion on what items should be exhibited in Anchorage, as well as how they should be exhibited. This 2005 trip to NMAI was led by the Center’s director, Aron L. Crowell, and Anchorage Museum curator Suzi Jones, who took Tlingit and Haida elders and artists in partnership with Sealaska Heritage Institute to NMAI for this review. Those who reviewed art at MNAI include Clarence Jackson, Delores Churchill, George Ramos, Anna Katzeek, Donald Gregory, Rosita Worl, and Peter Jack.

The transcript in this collection is from one audiovisual recording (Videotape 156) made during the visit, but is not comprehensive of the visit. For additional recordings and transcripts from this review researchers should contact the Arctic Studies Center.
