Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains various recordings concerning the Tsimshian Indians, which consist of recorded oral histories, oratory, and language lessons. These recordings document both the Tsimshian of Alaska and British Columbia. This collection will continue to grow as more recordings are obtained.

Use Restrictions: Intellectual Properties Note: Since SHI adheres to the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials, and since we desire to honor Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian traditional cultural belief that clans retain the intellectual property rights to clan stories or songs, patrons who use or study clan songs or stories are asked to credit clan ownership to stories and songs.

Acquisition Method: The recordings in this collection were obtained by SHI prior to Oct. 2007.

Item 1: Audio recording of Tsimshian language lessons by Louise Turner and Lucille Benson, dated September 5, 1985. Contains English words with the Tsimshian equivalent language lesson. Format; cassette.

Item 4: Audio recording from May 1970, from Annette Island [Metlakatla, Alaska]. Speakers include Jacqueline Hayward and Tom Brendille giving a small language lesson in Tsimshian. Format; cassette.

Item 5: Audio recording dated January 29th [year unknown], featuring Russell Hayward, Solomon Guthrie, and Ira Booth discussing what lead to ANCSA, and the Tsimshian participation or non-participation with in it. Format; cassette.

Item 6: Audio recording dated June 1985 featuring Lucile Oliver chronicling the Tsimshian protest and efforts to nullify an ANCSA requirement which stipulates that the presence of an Alaska native group must be able to document their presence in the state prior to 1867. Format; cassette. Note: This tapes concerns the controversy that arose for the Tsimshian since some federal Indian policies were critical of the Tsimshian being Alaska Native, and thus ineligible for ANCSA, since the Tsimshian were living primarily in British Columbia with the sale of Alaska in 1867.

Item 7: Audio recording of Russell Hayward, Solomon Guthrie, and Ira Booth sharing traditional oral literature in the Tsimshian language, undated. Format; cassette.

Item 8: Audio recording of Tsimshian “Conversations 1: Getting Ready to Go,” produced by Dum Baal-dum, 1996. Cassette format.

Item 9: Audio recordings from the Tsimshian “Gathering of Elders: Birth of a Dictionary, A Work in Progress” project of 1995-96, which included elders speaking and responding to inquiries about Tsimshian words. 6 CD set, produced by Dum Baal-dum.
