Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of forty-five recordings of oral history interviews of Tlingit and Haida elders conducted between 1978 and 1980 by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) ANCSA Office to document 14(h)1 historic sites in Southeast Alaska. These recordings were conducted in partial connection to the Sealaska Corporation’s 1974 historic sites interviews, also held by Sealaska Heritage Institute.

The recordings in this collection are arranged according the date of the interview, an arrangement created by the BIA. The interviewee’s name and the area of their knowledge are provided. The elders interviewed were considered to be some of the most authoritative individuals on historic sites, at the time the interviews were conducted.

The content on these recordings document Tlingit and Haida historic sites in a question and answers type of interview, often as elders looked over maps. The interviews contain cultural content, such as clan histories, stories, and songs, which tie the Tlingit and Haida to their historic lands for thousands of years.

The collection also contains two partial transcriptions of recordings, presumably transcribed by UAF staff during the 1990s
