Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of eight CD-Rs, six of which contain oral histories from Southeast Alaska Natives, primarily Tlingit Indians. The CDs contain oral history recordings that capture prominent Tlingit individuals speaking on important issues circa 1970s to the 1990s. The recordings in this collection are copies of those from the holdings of the Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), which were compiled via UAF’s Project Jukebox oral history program. UAF graduate student Kenneth Frank Austin (UAF ’99), then focusing his research on an aspect of Tlingit culture, worked on this project for UAF, and appears to have assembled the CDs in this jukebox. However, issues at the time and since, such as funding, have not allowed the jukebox to be posted online.

The CDs in this collection contain interviews with the following Tlingit elders; George and Jessie Dalton, George Davis, Austin Hammond, Cyrus Peck, Sr., Roy Petrovich, Walter Soboleff and Alfred Widmark.  Please note there is no index for the order of the speakers.  A paper copy from the Jukebox online site accompanies the CDs, identifying the speakers as well as the subjects discussed by Austin Hammond, George and Jessie Dalton and Walter Soboleff.  The last piece in this collection pertains to an instructional CD for using Jukebox as well as an introduction to Project Jukebox.  Please note the web links for the Southeast Alaska interviews do not work.

Use Restrictions: Intellectual Properties Note: Since SHI adheres to the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials, and since we desire to honor Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian traditional cultural belief that clans retain the intellectual property rights to clan stories or songs, patrons who use or study clan songs or stories are asked to credit clan ownership to stories and songs.

Acquisition Method: The material in the collection was transferred from SHI’s Culture Department to SHI archives on Aug. 10, 2010. SHI’s Culture Department received these materials from UAF Curator of Oral History Bill Schneider on Nov. 26 2003. Item 8 was received from Bill Schneider in 2010.

Item 6: Digital CD “Maxell”, purple, in blue plastic case, with “Sealaska Heritage” written above the spindle hole and “Institute Jukebox Program Draft 11/26/03” written below the spindle hole.  The CD contains a draft of audio interviews and a proposed web design draft sent by Dr. Bill Schneider, Curator of Oral History, University of Alaska Fairbanks to Sealaska Heritage Institute regarding improving the Sealaska Jukebox Project.  The draft includes written information about the subjects covered by the Tlingit elders during interviews.  For a list of interviewees please refer to collection Items 1-2.

Item 7: Printout of the Introduction to Sealaska Jukebox Project and four webpages concerning audio interviews of Tlingit elders George and Jessie Dalton, Austin Hammond and Walter Soboleff found on CD (Item 7) that list recorded interview topics.  The webpages contain the UAF archival tape reference numbers for each interview as well as links to the audio.  Please note the audio links do not work as Tlingit elder interviews are not available at this time.
