Scope and Contents of the Materials

This one-box collection contains eight original cassette tapes and ten CDs containing recordings of KTOO-FM’s Conversations in Tlingit program. Some of the CDs and cassettes are duplicates of each other, but overall, the recordings date to 1995-1996, 1998 and 2000-2001. The recordings have been organized by format and then chronologically. SHI encourages those interested in listening to these recordings to use only the CD formatted recordings.

Note: Some recordings from this collection have been translated and are provided in SHI’s MC 55: NSF Conversations & Narratives in Tlingit Recordings Collection.

Collection Historical Note

Conversations in Tlingit was a radio program aired on KTOO-FM radio in Juneau, Alaska from 1995 to 2001. The program aired during the last Saturday in January and featured Walter A. Soboleff and others, including Nora Marks Dauenhauer, telling stories in English, and then recounting the same story Tlingit. Sometimes conversations were entirely in Tlingit. Overall the program served to provide those interested in the Tlingit language with examples of advanced grammar and conversation spoken alongside with an English translation.
