Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of four DVDs created and filmed by KATH-TV containing footage of the Juneau Remembers World War II project undertaken by Kathy Ruddy and Harriett Roberts in 1999 and 2000. The audiovisual recordings which took place in September 1999 and March 2000 are contained on these recordings. Discs 1 and 2 contain footage of the speakers who spoke in September 1999 at Centennial Hall and Discs 3 and 4 contain footage of the speakers who spoke in March 2000 at the Juneau Camp 2 Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall. These DVDs show participants speaking, with their names on the screen in order to identify who was speaking. The recordings amount to approximately 8 hours of recordings.

Collection Historical Note

Juneau Remembers World War II was a project conceived as part of a Juneau History Grant Award project, and coordinated by Kathy Ruddy and Harriett Roberts. Starting on September 18, 1999 World War II veterans as well as those who did not serve and remembered what life was like during the war were invited to speak at a forum at Centennial Hall and share their experiences.  High school students and community members who did not experience World War II were also invited to listen to the speakers and ask questions.

Another event aimed to document the memories of Native Alaskan veterans and civilians who remembered the war years was held at the Alaska Native Brotherhood hall on March 9, 2000. Native Alaskan residents of Juneau had been notified in September 1999 that there would be an event specifically for them to tell their memories of the war years in the winter of 2000. Participants spoke in Tlingit, and among those who spoke was Dr. Walter Soboleff. Young people were also invited to attend this event to hear their elders speak as well. Overall this collection provides a very interesting insight into what life was like in Juneau during World War II from a Native and non-native perspective.
