The collection consists of recordings, transcriptions of recordings, some paper documents associated with the KTOO-FM Southeast Native Radio (SNR) program that operated in Juneau, Alaska from 1985 to 2001. While the collection contains of paper documents concerning SNR, but the vast bulk of the collection consists of approximately 400 recordings from the SNR program housed in 17 boxes in CD and reel formats. The recordings are rich in content regarding Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian culture and issues, though additional general Alaska Native issues are well represented in the collection. These recordings contain the words of Alaska Native rights activists, Native elders, Native educators and cultural specialists, and a wide array of other individuals. Overall, the programs produced on SNR serve as a rich source for information on Alaska Native culture and heritage.
These recordings have been arranged into four record groups or Series, primarily reflecting the format or genre of the materials housed.
Series I: CD use copies of migrated recordings.
Series II: Original SNR open reels & DAT recordings.
Series III: Paper documents associated with SNR.
Series IV: Transcriptions of recordings.
Explanation of Series. Series I contains around 163 recordings migrated from open reels to CD format, that are housed in Series II. Not all reels have been migrated to CD format, and work is ongoing. Series II contains approximately 260 open reels and a few DAT recordings. Series III contains paper documents associated with the collection, such as materials and posters generated by KTOO and SNR while in operation. Series IV contains transcriptions of recordings from Series I, and this series is expected to grow as more recordings are transcribed.
In regards to organization of the collection, an item-by-item listing or inventory for the collection has been created, which documents the titles and some content of each SNR show contained in this collection. As mentioned, Series I contains migrated recordings available on CD, which are open to the public for research purposes. The original reels associated with these recordings were disposed of prior to donation. Series II contains open reels, primarily 9 inch reels, and a few DAT recordings. Presently, most recordings in Series II are not available on CD, but future plans to migrate each reel or DAT recording are planned, and the CD versions of the migration process will be added to Series I. Presently SHI staff discourage the use of materials in Series II until they have been properly migrated to CD format, in part because of the fragile nature of the old reel to reel recordings. While plans are in place to have each recording migrated to modern format, if a patron desires to have a CD copy of a specific recording made from Series II, special arrangements can be made. Consult the archivist for further details. In regards to the papers in Series III, these are housed in one folder and consist of letterhead, flyers, and other paperwork lightly documenting the show and its operations.
Repository: Sealaska Heritage Institute Archives
Acquisition Source: Capital Community Broadcasting, Inc. (KTOO)
Acquisition Method: The recordings in this collection were donated to SHI by the Capital Community Broadcasting, Inc. (KTOO), represented by station manager Bill Legere, on April 22, 2010. To mark the donation, a ceremony was held and attended by many personalities involved in the production of SNR programs over the years. Sealaska Heritage Institute expresses a thanks to all SNR staff and KTOO-FM, but issues a special thanks to Kathy Ruddy, who was a former SNR staff member and the individual who worked to ensure the recordings were saved after the show concluded in 2001, and who originally contacted SHI about donating the SNR recordings.
