ID: MS/038
Primary Creator: Bureau of Indian Affairs
Extent: 44.0 Boxes
Date Acquired: 01/11/2012

This 44 box contains the records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) censuses conducted for Alaska Natives residing in Alaska from between 1913 and 1972. The census records are organized alphabetically by village, town, or city, and numerically.
This collection consists of a redacted copy of the BIA censuses given to SHI by the National Archives branch in Anchorage. As redacted copy, these records were censored for any sensitive and legally privileged information. Overall however, this redaction effort affects very little of the overall content of the collection, which serves as a rich outlet for researchers interested in Alaska Native genealogy and other research topics.
Repository: Sealaska Heritage Institute Archives
Acquisition Source: NARA, Anchorage Branch
Acquisition Method: The material in the collection was obtained by SHI for research purposes from the National Archives & Records Administration, Anchorage Branch, represented by Robin Dexter, on January 11, 2012.
