Scope and Contents of the Materials

This two-box collection consists of hundreds of images in negative and print format, one historic photograph dating to the 1920s, and two portable hard-drives with images from Celebration 2008 and 2010, and other photography projects undertaking by photography Brian Wallace.

Box 1 of this collection contains negatives and black and white photographs taken by Wallace during the 1980s and in 1994.  These images consist primarily of photographs of Alaska Native Brotherhood (ANB) and Alaska Native Sisterhood (ANS) leaders and gatherings during the 1980s.  This box also contains a negative photograph of the founding fathers of the Alaska Native Brotherhood, image circa 1912, taken at Sitka, by Winter & Pond.  Also found in Box 1 are images of Cecilia Kunz in regalia, and images of the Git-Hoan and Xudzidaa Kwáan dance troupes and the Native Market from SHI sponsored Native American Heritage Month 2010.  Finally, Box 1 houses two portable hard-drives that contain a few thousand images taken by Brian Wallace at SHI’s Celebration 2008 and 2010 via a contract arrangement. The images are only in digital format.  These images capture the whole of Celebration 2008 and 2010, from parades, dancing, events, to the Artists’ Market and the Juried Art Show. Additional folders contain contract-for-hire photography, such as Wallace’s photography of Celebration events, lectures, and individuals.

Box 2 contains the final item in the collection which is a single historic oversized photograph of the founding fathers of the Alaska Native Brotherhood, image circa 1912, taken at Sitka, by Winter & Pond.  This photograph was retained by the Wallace family for a few generations before its donation.  People in picture are identified on the matte in handwritten pen.
