Scope and Contents: This collection contains recordings of Tlingit Property Law workshops held at the Sealaska Heritage Foundation (now Sealaska Heritage Institute) in circa 1983. The meetings were held to determine aspects of Tlingit property law for the purposes of determining ownership of Tlingit at.óowu and art, which have since facilitated and provided documentation for court cases and NAGPRA.
The original meetings were hosted at Sealaska Heritage Institute with funds from a grant, chaired by Rosita Worl and Charles W. Smythe, with Anna Katzeek as translator, and a small group of Tlingit elders. Identified Tlingit elders include Mathew Fred. Although all the meetings were not recorded, it does appear the second meeting is captured on the recordings in this collection, a meeting which captured the feedback of Tlingit elders. The original meeting was captured on cassette recording, which were migrated to CD in 2007, and both formats are contained in this collection. The collection also contains a transcription of Tape 1.
