Scope and Contents: This one box collection consists of audiovisual recordings, digital photographs, and papers concerning the Sealaska Heritage Institute’s annual Native American Heritage Month Lecture Series, which began in 2009. This collection expected to grow each year as the Lecture Series continues, and recordings from each year are added to this collection.
Concerning the arrangement of the collection, Folders 1-7 contain DVD recordings of the presentations given at the 2009 Lecture Series, and Folders 8-14 contain the DVD recordings for the 2010 Lecture Series. Each DVD has a label with the speaker’s name, lecture title, and the date the presentation was given. Transcriptions to some lectures are provided with the DVD. Folder 15 contains a DVD with digital photographs taken by Brian Wallace during the lectures series and the accompanying events. Folder 16 contains press clippings about the Lecture Series. Folder 17 contains recordings from the 2011 year and Lecture Series.
Researcher Note: The topics presented are broad in nature and address some of the following topics and issues: first contact between Alaska Native and European explorers; southeast Alaskan linguistics and languages; contact between Russian traders and the Tlingit; the development of Alaska Native corporations under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act; Southeast Native perspectives on statehood; the anthropology of button blankets DNA, and oral narratives; Tlingit oral narratives/history/traditions; military relations with Tlingit in 1869; the tradition Tlingit educational system; languages and the Bering Strait; and Tlingit deep history.
