Scope and Contents: This collection contains various historical photographs acquired from Juneau-based antique dealer and collector John DelGado.
Items 1-8 consist of cabinet card photographs dating to between the 1880 and 1910 and show various views of Southeast Alaska Native and Native villages. Included among these are photographs of; Tsimshian female students at Metlakatla, Alaska; a view of Haida totems near Howkan, Alaska; and other images associated with the Tlingit at Juneau and Sitka. Photographers include Winter & Pond, Edward DeGroff, E.J. Partridge, Miller-Chase, and perhaps J.B. Prather.
Nearly all of the remaining photographs date to around 1940 and concern the Tlingit totems near Wrangell or the Chief Shakes Clan House, Wrangell, Alaska and its dedication in 1940 after it was restored via a government Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) project. One additional photo dates to around the year 1900 and shows an interior view of the Chief Shakes Clan House.
