Scope and Contents: This collection contains 24 historical photographs of Tlingit Native America Indians from Southeast Alaska, primarily studio photographs taken at Sitka and Juneau. The bulk of these images date to around the year 1900 and primarily consist of studio portraits in Cabinet Card (23 items) and daguerreotype (1 item) format.
Nearly all of these photographs are unlabeled and most of the people in these photographs are currently unidentified. However, these photographs primarily concern a few Tlingit families from the Sitka and Juneau areas, and many photos contain the images of the same people. One photograph contains the words “Seward-Kunz” and another “Mrs. Annie Thompson, Sitka”. It appears that there are a number of pictures of Seward Kunz. Identified photographers consist primarily of Winder & Pond and Landerkin & Winter.
Note: six 8” x 10” photographs have been added to this collection as an addendum. These images are not originals, but are reproductions and Rosa Miller—the daughter of Bessie Visaya—possesses the originals. These photos contain views showing Alaska Native Sisterhood gatherings and three images of various Tlingit in ceremonial clothing. Although undated and labeled, the pictures seem date to circa 1930.
