Acquisition Note: Source: Marian Schmidt. The materials in the collection were donated to SHI’s Special Collections Research Center by the daughter of Louise Earhart, Mrs. Marian Schmidt, on September 13, 2001. Accession # 2001.001.
Scope and Contents: This collection contains a photocopy of Louise Earhart’s memoir of her time volunteering at the Haines Alaska Presbyterian orphanage. It appears this memoir was written during the 1920s or 1930s and was composed in a topical story-type form. It is comprised of 45 pages handwritten pages with some photographs and each topical section is clearly outlined by Earhart. The memoir describes in detail the activities of the Haines Presbyterian orphanage, Presbyterian operations in Haines, town-life at Haines, and local Native Alaskans. Of particular interest is her section on the local Native inhabitants, which contains a rather naive or Western explanation of local Native life and customs.
