Scope and Contents: This collection contains five photos of a single image from the Chilkoot peace ceremony captured in the film Haa Shagoon. Image format includes two 8 x 10 photos, one 5 x 7, a negative, and a slide negative. It also includes negatives with three views capturing scenes from Haa Shagoon.
The single image, which is in numerous formats, captures a crucial moment in the peace ceremony wherein Daisy Phillips, the Peace Deer, crosses her arms in a ‘tied up position’ indicating that peace had not yet been established. This gesture called upon Anglo-Saxon neighbors to ‘untie’ or make peace with their Tlingit neighbors. Also included in the image are Matilda Lewis (adopted by Lillian Hammond) and Charlie Jimmy. In the background Vivian Land [?], niece of Agnes Bellinger, appears to be visible.
The negative which captures scenes from Haa Shagoon show a man making adjustments to Austin Hammond’s robes, one with Hammond standing, and the last image appears to show Hammond and others dancing.
